Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

OVERVIEW
Polyvinyl chloride, abbreviated as PVC, also known as simply vinyl, is the world's third-most widely produced synthetic polymer. PVC is produced in 2 forms: rigid and flexible. It was synthesised in 1872 by a German chemist Eugen Baumann. By the early 20th century, chemical companies were trying to use it commercially but failed due to the material being too brittle.

In 1926 the method of plasticising PVC created a material which was used for a variety of products and continues to be used today.

  • Medical equipment
  • Building materials
  • Piping
  • Clothing
  • Signs
  • Stickers
  • Cards (credit cards, membership cards etc.)

The unique properties of PVC make it an industry standard for many processes and products:

  • Density
  • Affordability
  • Durability
  • Strength
